The Belfast Peace Wall
Understanding the Belfast Peace Wall — history, current status, and the experience of visiting on a private mural tour.
The Peace Walls were built in 1969 as temporary structures to separate Catholic and Protestant communities during the Troubles. Over 30 kilometres of walls still stand today, with gates that open and close at certain times.
With roughly 3,500 lives lost during the conflict, the walls were a desperate measure. The aim is to bring them all down, but this requires prolonged peace and change on both sides. Until then, they stand as powerful monuments to division — and to the hope of reconciliation.
Visitors from around the world leave messages of peace on the wall. Our mural tour stops here so you can add your own words alongside thousands of others.
